*  Bounce your child on your lap in time as you sing and then let your child fall backwards on the word 'fall'.  

*  This is a good song to use at the swimming pool to encourage your child to 'fall' into the pool, supervised of course!

*  You could also use it to encourage your child to come down a slide.

*  Make a wall with building bricks and put a cuddly toy on the wall.  I'm sure your child won't need prompting to knock the wall down at the appropriate moment!

*  Make a birthday cake of this nursery rhyme, using a chocolate Easter egg for the body.  You could even act the song out and break the egg. 

*  Create the scene by decorating a real egg shell and stick on pipe cleaners for legs and arms.

History
The first known version of the words were published in Samuel Arnold's Juvenile Amusements in 1797 and the music first appeared in James William Elliott's National Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs in 1870.  The title of this nursery rhyme was eighteenth century slang for a short, clumsy person, and the rhyme was originally a riddle, whereby you were supposed to guess that the main character was an egg since he couldn't be put back together again.  That is why he is always drawn as an egg.
