Activities
ACTIONS: For the first and last two lines of lyrics, wiggle your fingers in the air to depict the star twinkling.  For line 3, draw a circle in the air with your index finger to depict the world.  For line 4, create a diamond shape with your thumbs and index fingers.

BEDTIME: This is a perfect song for a bedtime lullaby, to get your child calm enough to go to sleep.  Rock your child in your arms as you sing, or stroke their hair as they lie in bed.

FURTHER LISTENING:  Find Mozart's 12 Variations on 'Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman' on youtube, and have a dance party with your little one!

SENSORY LEARNING: Take your child to a sensory class where twinkly lights are often used to go along with this song, or buy yourself some fibre optic lights, turn the lights off and softly sing.  They will love it!

ASTRONOMY:  Show your little one the stars in the sky if possible  and teach them about the various shapes, particularly the Great Bear and the Little Bear!

History
The lyrics are originally part of a longer poem called 'Little Star' by Jane Taylor, which was first published in Rhymes for the Nursery in 1806.

The music was originally written for the french song, 'Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman' by M.Bouin, which was first published without words in 1761.  Mozart wrote his 12 variations for piano on this melody in 1781-2.  Different versions of this same melody have been used by many other nursery rhymes, for example, 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' and 'The Alphabet Song'.
